合體字其源頭可追溯至先秦時君主用來傳達命令或徵調軍隊的符文，通常是把幾個篆字合並在一起，刻在竹或木上，再剖為兩半，雙方各執一半，合之以驗真假。漢代被道士們借用到所謂符篆上，稱為「復文」。

從宋代起，合體字已從道士畫符，演變為民眾表達避兇求吉願望的一種手段。

The origin of the combined character can be traced back to the runes used by the monarch to convey orders or recruit troops in the pre-Qin Dynasty. It is usually a combination of several seal characters, engraved on bamboo or wood, and then cut in half, with each side holding half, and the combined character can be verified as true or false.In the Han Dynasty, Taoist priests borrowed the so-called Fu seal style, called "Fu Wen".

Since the Song Dynasty, the combination character has evolved from the Taoist painting character to a means for people to express their desire to avoid evil and seek good luck.
